Can blind cats see a bright future? The dedicated work of Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. is making sure that happens.

Born in 2005, Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary, located in St. Pauls North Carolina, has been providing a safe and loving refuge for cats who would most likely have been considered worthless or even euthanized. At this peaceful shelter, these cats enjoy a life of love, care, exercise, and play: the same things all cats desperately need and rightfully deserve.

Blind cats can do essentially everything that cats with full vision can do. Take Oreo, for example. He was one of 63 neglected cats seized from a Pennsylvania home. His eyes were a mess and important dental work was necessary. Since his arrival, he has grown into a purring, snuggly lap cat. One might think that a blind cat would have trouble playing or climbing; however, the staff at Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary has found the only real obstacles have been walls, fences, and gates. This is because they cannot see or conceptualize that there is another side. Watch Oreo clearly demonstrating the ease of maneuvering a cat tree…and fast!

Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary says that as long as you keep items in consistent, familiar places, blind cats navigate easily around a home. They become accustomed to the varying textures and smells of the areas surrounding the litter box, feeding dishes, and play areas.

Aside from neglect and abuse, cats can become blind from a variety of illnesses including eye infections from upper respiratory infections, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. It is also possible for blindness to result from not being wormed. The worms move through the cat’s body and can destroy the optic nerves behind the eyes. It is vital to ensure your cat receives regular check-ups and necessary medications and immunizations. Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary says, “If your cat is sneezing, coughing and eyes are getting goopy, get to the vet for antibiotics! If your cat is eating like crazy and losing weight or drinking water like there is no tomorrow RUN to the vet!”

Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary is available to speak to groups about pets with disabilities. And like most rescue organizations, they can only continue their significant work through the support of caring people and organizations. Please visit their site and Facebook page to learn more about the shelter, its residents and the many ways you can help bring awareness to these beautiful felines who are looking for forever homes.

  1. I’ve been a supporter of Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary for sometime now, and in my opinion, BCRandS is the most loving, caring shelter in the world. I don’t really like to call BCRandS a “shelter”, because what they really are is a caring, loving, and in most cases, a forever HOME, where tender loving care is given in abundance, by human angels, to God’s most precious little gifts.

Thank you for such a wonderful profile!

  3. I am a supporter for BCR as well, and have fostered for them as well. The care and love ALL the cats receive in the sanctuary is truly wonderful. I have 2 blind cats, and they are the sweetest girls. They navigate around my home with no problem and are so entertaining when they play.
