The Florida nonprofit group L.E.A.S.H. has designed a new program which helps to socialize feral kittens so that they may be adopted. The program, called the “Angry Kitten University,” solves one of the major issues facing managing the feral cat population: Feral cats often cannot be adopted out because they are not socialized.
Angry Kitten University could change all of that. By socializing feral kittens at a young age, the program teaches the kittens not to fear humans. These socialized kittens are then put up for adoption. All adoptable kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and put on a flea preventative. Best of all, their adoption fee is only $25, and adopters can take home a second kitten for free.
Kittens are brought into the program by volunteers for the county’s trap-neuter-release program. As volunteers find kittens, they turn them into the Angry Kitten University for assessment and a chance at getting a great home. The program rates the kittens according to a “terror alert” system based on the kittens’ reactions, behaviors, size and age, and fear level. Some kittens require more socialization than others before they’re ready to be adopted.
