A year ago, Dan and Tracy Carlson rescued five infant kittens someone abandoned at Tracy’s workplace. The litter consisted of three girls and two boys. The boys did not survive, but the girls are all healthy and strong today.

Dan wrote at Reddit that the vet said “Girls are often stronger in these instances (I don’t recall why, or even if she knew the reasons), so the ones that made it were all girls. This has made for a seriously intense litterbox experience. The vet said that we’d be lucky if one made it. To have kept three is pretty incredible.”

These images, posted by Dan at Imgur, chronicle and celebrate the kittens’ first year.

When they were little, they would howl at mealtime like nobody’s business.
