Seems this cat is a little fed up with playing second fiddler to the new stranger in the house. When the opportunity presents, he, literally, jumps at the chance and an ever-so–carefully calculated act gives him the space he needs, if only for a moment.
Was this on purpose or mere happenstance? Only the cat knows for sure.
