If you’re a fan of Star Wars, then chances are you’ve already seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens multiple times. The blockbuster hit released in December of 2015 brought moviegoers to the theater in throngs.

But what you may not have known is that a cat named Pork Chop actually helped with one of the movie’s scenes. The scene where Rey is interrogated by Kylo Ren portrays Rey’s emerging Force power battling back against Kylo Ren’s use of dark Force powers. While much of the movie featured music composed by John Williams, there was no music for this scene. Without sound of some type, the scene fell flat, as the actors motioned at each other. It needed something more.

In an interview with Fandago, Star Wars sound editor Matthew Wood explains that the crew tried many different sound options to try to get the scene to work. Ultimately, sound designer David Acord dubbed in the sound of Pork Chop, his cat, purring. The approach worked, giving the scene life and intensity without overpowering it or being too dramatic. It’s a subtle effect that you’re unlikely to notice unless you’re looking for it.

While Star Wars had a massive production budget, it just goes to show you that sometimes the simplest answers are the best ones. The next time you watch The Force Awakens, be sure to keep an ear out for Pork Chop!

  1. Not all SW fans have seen the movie or even want to because some of us recognize that it’s junk and that the Expanded Universe will always be what really happened after the original trilogy. #legendsneverdie
