Our friend Chase Holiday, creator of the well known Furball Fables cat videos, is participating in this weekend’s LA Feline Film Festival. She and the Furballs pounced on the chance at getting an exclusive interview with festival director Erik DeLeo and have kindly agreed to share the interview with Life With Cats readers:
On a very hot Los Angeles day, The Furball Fable Cats had a chance to talk to LA Feline Film Festival Director, Erik DeLeo about the first LA Feline Film Festival – #LAFFF, coming up this Sunday, September 21.
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your very busy week to talk to us cats, Erik. Tell us a little about yourself and you connection to the LA Feline Film Festival?
Well, I started a green pet company for cats a few years ago. I guess I like creating things, so I had an idea to do a film fest since cat videos are so popular. And then we got a great opportunity to do one.
Can you tell us where the festival is and when?
Organikat’s LA Feline Film Festival will take place Sunday, September 21st from 1 p.m. -10 p.m. at Christmas Tree Lane at the Exposition Park in Los Angeles.
How did the LA Feline Film Festival come in to being?
One of my friends forwarded me an article on the Internet Cat Video Festival and said “Hey, you should bring this to LA.” So, after some brief email exchanges, I did. And thus the LA Feline Film Festival was born.
We will be showing the first debut outside of Minneapolis of the Walker Art Center 2014 Internet Cat Video Fest reel. This year’s reel was edited by Will Braden, who will also be a guest at the festival. Will is the creator of the Henri le Chat Noir series.
Yogi Otto: Henri is that cat who calls himself foremost feline philosopher who is moved by his interminable sense of ennui.
Fairy: We met Will Braden at the TheFriskies awards!
Merlin Sage: We love him!! He put our video, Cat Confessions in the 2014 Cat Video Festival Reel. And it will be playing at the LA Film Festival in our home town!!
What is the connection to the Cat Video Festival that is put on by the Walker Arts Center?
Cat Vid Fest began as an initiative of the Walker Art Center to bring Internet Cat Videos offline. Organikat is bringing the Feline Film Festival to LA in a large, all-day festival format full of cat-themed entertainment, vendors and more.
You are the producer of the festival but you are the founder of Organikat?
Yes, my company Organikat in conjunction with the Walker Art Center brought the festival to LA. However, we had a lot of help from our great principle sponsor Adopt & Shop, plus the Hallmark Channel, the Paw Project, Swheat Scoop and our other contributing sponsors.
What does Organikat do/sell?
With regards to Organikat, we make organic and eco products for cats. And all of it is made and sourced in the USA which is important to us. For example, we have an organic catnip toy and an eco cat scratcher made from 100% recycled cardboard. Our products will also be available for sale at the festival. Not only do cats love it, but the stuff smells really, really good as well.
Yogi: I can smell it now. I gotta get some of that Catnip 1st thing at the the Festival!!!
How will the festival help cat rescue groups and cat adoption?
There are approximately 12 local adoption organizations bringing cats for live cat adoptions at the festival. A portion of proceeds will go to select animal rescues including NKLA (No Kill Los Angeles), Stray Cat Alliance, Kitty Bungalow, Fix Nation and Milo’s Sanctuary.
Fairy Princess: I bet a lot of cats are going to find new homes at the Festival!
Who are the sponsors of the festival?
The principal sponsor of the LA Feline Film Festival is Adopt & Shop Culver City, the only nonprofit pet retailer in California that offers a one-stop adoption and shopping experience. Sponsors also include Swheat Scoop, The Paw Project, Natural Balance, Pussy and Pooch, Animal Health Care Center in Eagle Rock and Modern Cat Magazine.
Will we be able to buy any cool cat stuff at the festival?
Yes! We will have a variety of cat product vendors.
How many humans are you expecting?
10,000 cat fanatics with their feline friends and more! Attendees are welcome to bring pet cats.
Can cats attend the festival too?
Yes! Cats are welcome as long as they are good in crowds and on a leash or in a carrier. We’re sure you’ll be well-behaved
Merlin Sage: Wow what a line up! Yea, we hear Dusty the Klepto kitty will try to steal the show!
Yogi Otto: We are so excited! Thank you Erik! We look forward to seeing you on Sunday. For our friends at Life With Cats, please come visit our Furball Fables booth with lots of surprises and a Catty Stack Give Away!. We will also be making a video about the festival with Miss Kitty Glitter, of The We Like Kitties Club!
