Only 19 days after being adopted into a loving home, Meatloaf, whose plea for a forever home when viral last month, passed away.
On August 20, Meatloaf got a new home and a new diet when his forever family took him home. Steve Gusman and his fiancée, Mary Armstrong, picked up the big boy thrilled welcome him.
Armstrong, speaking with KWQC just a few days after getting Meatloaf home said, “He is doing very well, enjoying the attention and going up and down stairs himself and chasing toys.”  That included his being on a new diet of a special weight-control cat food.
Sadly, last Saturday, Meatloaf appeared to not be feeling well and was rushed to a local veterinary hospital where he died. “It was liver disease from the human food he ate [before being adopted],” Armstrong said. “Steve is taking this very hard. It took him 10 years to get Meatloaf after our first cat, Tiger, passed.”

Meatloaf did garner a lot of attention from people near and far, but it was Gusman and Armstrong that got the thumbs up from Kings Harvest Pet Rescue.

Gusman, Iraq veteran suffering from PTSD had been looking for a therapy cat. After seeing the story on the news, the couple decided that Meatloaf and Gusman had to meet. The cat’s personality easily won over the veteran and they made for a perfect pairing.

“I’m just really glad he got to have his last days in a loving home. We were there for him as much as he was for us. Hard to walk into our house and not have him greet us at the door.”

Meatloaf the cat died Saturday, only 19 days after being adopted at a Davenport, Iowa shelter by Steve Gusman and fiancée Mary Armstrong of Moline, Illinois.
While Meatloaf only had 19 days with his new family, he was loved. The takeaway for all pet owners from this sad tale is human food it not healthy for our cats. We are their guardians and, as such, bear a responsibility to make sure that we take care of our animals in all aspects of their lives.  For what they give us, it is the least we can do for them.
