In a stunning discovery, a cat who has been missing for 11 years has been found and reunited with her owner.
Karen Jarnecic shared her life with Allie the cat for eight years. Jarnecic took Allie in after she was found wandering the streets, and Jarnecic had Allie microchipped. That simple act would help to return Allie to her 11 years later.
After returning home from a trip in 2005, Jarnecic learned that Allie had escaped out the door while in the care of a pet sitter. Jarnecic searched for Allie, posting a missing cat ad, but no one ever called to report that they’d found Allie. Jarnecic wasn’t sure if Allie could survive, since her front paws had been declawed, and eventually Jarnecic’s vet listed the cat as deceased.
So when Allie was found earlier this year, it came as a total surprise. Allie wandered into JoAnn Burns’ garage during the winter of 2013 to get warm. Burns named her Kit Kitty, and began caring for the cat. When Allie started showing signs of wanting to come into Burns’ house, Burns took her to the vet.
And it was then that Burns learned Allie’s true identity. The vet scanned Allie for a microchip, found her chip, and was able to contact Jarnecic. Jarnecic and Burns corresponded, and Allie was returned to Jarnecic, 11 long years after she first went missing.
This incredible story is proof of just how important it is to microchip your cats, even if they don’t go outdoors. You never know what may happen, and Jarnecic and Allie never would have been connected had it not been for Allie’s microchip.
