The Animals in Need Thrift Store in Riverside, Missouri is unlike any other thrift store out there. This store is home to 15 cats, all whom have been deemed “unadoptable.” One hundred percent of the store’s proceeds are donated to helping sick or homeless animals in Kansas City.
When store owner Al Richey retired a few years ago, he restructured the store’s mission. Today the store is staffed by 25 volunteers. For years, the store helped homeless cats to find new homes – people began to come to the stores to look for adoptable cats, and Richey facilitated many adoptions.
While the store can’t continue its adoption work today, Richey has taken on the mission of spreading the word about the importance of spaying and neutering. The store partnered with the Northland Animal Welfare Society in 2005 to promote spaying and neutering; thanks to the project’s efforts, approximately 50,000 unwanted pets have been prevented from being born.
The Animals in Need Thrift Store is a great place to go if you’d like to do some shopping in the company of felines. With every purchase that you make, you’ll be helping cats in need – now that’s shopping that you can feel good about.
