Opie was injured by a stray bullet that came through a window in his family’s home, and his petmom believes that his misfortune saved her 3 year old son from taking the bullet. His understandably emotional petmom refused to have him put down, despite the unexpected and expensive costs for his medical care.

“He’s my son’s little hero,” says Opie’s petmom Angelica Sipe.

Opie was injured early last Thursday morning when a bullet came through a window of Sipe’s York, Pennsylvania home, went into the couch and then struck the cat. “It took me a second to realize what just happened. The first thing I did was check on my son and he was sound asleep. Then I saw my cat on the floor and that’s when I realized my cat was shot,” Sipe told WPMT Fox 43 News.

“It came in the top of his head, out the bottom of his neck, and back into his shoulder and out his armpit rib area.”

The bullet ricocheted, leaving holes in the couch where Sipe was resting then ending up lodged in a pillow on a loveseat across the room, where 3-year old Daemire slept. The bullet only missed the sleeping boy by a few inches.

“It could have been my son,” said Sipe, as she confirmed her belief that her boy was spared because the bullet hit the cat.

Sipe decided she could not bear to have Opie put down because of the expense to treat hin, so she had the vets go ahead and provide needed care. He was treated and underwent surgery at an emergency clinic and came home with a drainage tube and stitches. He has an appointment Monday to be checked and have the tube removed. Opie has some muscle damage but is expected to recover from his wounds.

“I wanted to keep him. He was my son’s little hero, so I need to keep him around,” she said.

The vet bills for his initial treatment neared $1,000, and will rise with his followup care. A GoFundMe account set up for Opie’s medical bills has already raised slightly more than $1,000.

Sipe wrote on GoFundMe: “So around 1am this morning my cat (opie) save my 3 yr old sons life. A stray bullet came through my front window of my living room where my son had fallen asleep after a hard day of playing and i was laying watching tv. The bullet went through my cats head through his shoulder and out his arm pit. The bullet then went through my couch pillow where i was laying and hit a pillow that was inches above my sons head. If my cat was not laying where he was the bullet would of hit my son. Me and my son are physical ok and as for my cat he is ok n the animal hospital where they said he will pull through. I am thankful for my cat and am in any way possible going to make sure he comes back home where he belongs. He is my hero!!!! And my son’s lifesaver.”
