Cat Depot Rescue, Adoption, Education and Resource Center, of Sarasota, FL is mourning the loss and celebrating the life of its caped crusader mascot and friend, Mighty Lou, a special needs cat who was adopted by a Cat Depot board member and served as ambassador for the organization while raising awareness of homeless cats and kittens and those in need.

Mighty Lou was spokescat for Cat Depot’s Friends Like Me program.

Mighty Lou was a special needs cat with neuropathy in his hind legs due to diabetes, and he was deaf. He donned his superhero cape and traveled around southwest Florida with his petmom Nancy Colby to promote helping homeless cats and kittens. Nancy and Cat Depot were  especially proud of his efforts to help cats who have suffered an injury or illness. Though he himself was deaf, Mighty Lou spoke loudly to his cause, and provided inspiration, happiness and laughter to all those who met him. Mighty Lou was a media sensation, life of the party and a friend to everyone he met including his animal friends. Mighty Lou was also an exceptionally good sport and loved to be the center of attention.

Mighty Lou’s diabetes had been well under control for quite some time, and was in remission for the past year and a half, but it came back with a vengeance during the last days of February and Mighty Lou quickly went down hill, became weak, stopped eating and passed away.  He spent his final days receiving treatment at a Critical Care Clinic but he couldn’t be saved.

The colorful character that was Mighty Lou will still have a presence with Cat Depot,  and his own Mighty Lou Facebook page, as well as his blog at Cat Depot’s website will continue. Cat Depot says another cat will take up the cape to represent the rescue when the time is right.

We featured Mighty Lou in two earlier posts: Mighty Lou: A Cat Overcomes Physical Challenges, on December 25, 2012, and quite recently, Mighty Lou – Special Needs Ambassador Cat Extraordinaire! on February 18, 2015.

His mighty spirit will remain alive in the hearts of everyone whose lives he touched. The Mighty Lou Memorial Fund has been established in his memory to carry on his mission of helping special needs cats at Cat Depot. And, a room at Cat Depot will be dedicated in Mighty Lou’s honor. Donations can be made at www.catdepot.org. Cat Depot is a nonprofit, no kill, free roaming rescue, adoption, education and resource center in Sarasota, FL.”
