Scotland’s first cat cafe, Maison de Moggy, opened this month. The cafe opened in a temporary pop-up location in Stockbridge, Edinburgh on January 18, where it will be in place through June. Afterwards the cafe will open in a permanent location.

The ground level cafe is what owner Laura O’Neill call “a paradise for our cats,” with “lots of places for them to climb and play as well as nooks and crannies to explore and snooze inside.” A dedicated cat nanny is on hand during business hours to make sure that both the cats and cafe customers enjoy the best possible experience.

A downstairs relaxation lounge allows up to 10 customers at a time for what is described as a spa-like experience where customers can unwind with the cafe’s cuddliest cats.

Founder Laura O’Neill told STV she was inspired to open the cafe after a trip to Japan.

“I went to Japan for a couple of weeks and when I was in Tokyo I went to a cat cafe,” said Laura.

“The experience was amazing, it was a big cat cafe over two floors…You took off your shoes, put on slippers, washed your hands and went and chilled with the cats.”

Back home, Laura learned that Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium had opened in London and decided that Scotland should have its own cat cafe.

The cat-friendly space was designed by Leith-based design studio SPLINTR.

The cafe has so far proved popular with customers and is taking bookings in advance.

You can follow Maison de Moggy at Facebook, and see the cats’ bios at the Maison de Moggy website.
