Michelin is the latest jumbo sized cat to end up at a shelter and make the news. The 34 pound fellow will spend the next year at a vet’s while on a careful weight loss plan before he is put up for adoption.

Michelin weighed in at a whopping 34 pounds when he came to the Moncton SPCA in New Brunswick Canada a week ago.  Vet Care Pet Hospital in Riverview has taken Michelin in order to help him lose weight carefully and get fit.  Vet Care expects the process to take a year, and plans to find Michelin a home when he is trimmed down.

Dr. Lethan Dwan spoke to CTV about Michelin, saying he probably got to be so fat through a combination of overfeeding and lazy habits.

“Some cats are lazier than others and he is probably a lazy cat by nature. So, a combination of being overfed and being lazy probably has resulted in him ending up this way,” says Dwan.

Noting the importance of stimulation and activity for cats, Dr. Dwan said: ” Just giving them different environments and different levels of stimulation and something more than just looking forward to the food bowl all day.”

Royal Canin is providing food for Michelin’s special weight loss diet plan.

Michelin will have company in Vet Care office cat Nigel, who is already reaching out a paw in friendship.

  1. I know for a fact that this cats weight is not a result of overfeeding. He is probably on a dry food diet. Totally high in carbs. Cats don’t digest carbs and like people if they don’t work the carbs off they get stored as fat. Just like people. So to put this cat on a diet they don’t have to cut back on the amount too much just switch him to a total canned food diet. The high protein will take the weight off. I know from experience. When my cat died from crystals in the bladder research showed dry food causes crystal that block the bladder so I took all my 3 cats off dry food and put them totally on canned. My obese female droped weight right away and is now a slim 8 lbs. So don’t starve this kitty to get the weight off just change what he eats.
