We can all agree that animal companionship enhances our lives in a multitude of ways.  As we age, that companionship sometimes becomes even more important.  Purina® knows this and is working with shelters to make adoption possible for qualified seniors.

Each year, the Purina® Pets for Seniors program teams up with at least 160 shelters to provide free adoption services to seniors over the age of 60.  The seniors must submit to the same screening process as prospective adopters, but Purina® reimburses the shelter a contracted amount to help pay for sterilization, immunizations, and any other costs.  When the adoption is finalized, the seniors also receive a certificate of adoption and Purina® coupons.

Studies show a host of benefits for seniors who share their lives with companion animals:

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Reduced risk of stroke and heart attack
  • Heightened alertness
  • Less chance of depression
  • Increased activity and exercise
  • Sense of routine and purpose

Shelters interested in partnering with Purina® in the Pets for Seniors program must have their application submitted by October 31. Selected shelters are offered contracted agreements in November, for the following year.  For those seniors interested in utilizing the program, the Purina® site offers a locator map to identify nearby participating shelters.
