The vet caring for a kitten rescued by firefighters in Marietta, Georgia is speaking out in response to those who said the effort was a waste of time and resources.

Houston was rescued from a storm drain in a 90 minute effort on the part of firefighters. Neighbors who’d heard the kitten’s pitiful cries gathered around and burst into applause and cheers when the kitten was saved.

Most of the tens of thousands of viewers who saw the rescue on the news were touched and appreciative of the firefighters’ work on behalf on the helpless creature. Some viewers, however, griped about the effort to save a cat and callously indicated that it was just one animal out of an abundance, so not worth the bother.

The veterinarian caring for the kitten says he hopes Houston will become the “poster cat” for adoptable pets.

Dr. Michael Good of  Town and Country Veterinary Clinic told WSV Channel 2 the kitten has recovered well and he says those who criticized the rescue effort are misguided.

“I just admire anyone who will help something that is innocent and that’s what this kitten was and it would have been easy to say, ‘Ahh they don’t have any value, what’s one less kitten?’ But somebody said it’s worth it,” Good said.

Homeless Pets Foundation is taking the kitten and will put  him up for adoption. They wrote at Facebook on May 7:

“Meet Houston, our newest member of Homeless Pets Foundation. This little guy was rescued from a storm drain by some amazing firefighters on Monday (see the link below for the news story-Houston is a celebrity!). He’s at Town and Country Veterinary Clinic now, getting some TLC and vet care.”

  1. Thank God for the heroes who believe in life for all of God’s creatures and will do all they can to save an innocent life. How can anyone believe the life of this sweet kitten was not worth it ? As Christians we are suppose to care for God’s creatures. There is far too much hate, anger and coldness in the world..maybe the rescue of one small kitten could melt the heart of someone with a stone heart. “Even the smallest voice can make a difference “.
