Three month old Phoenix the kitten was abandoned at a Los Angeles shelter last Monday with caustic chemical burn wounds to his paws, tail, ears and nose. Some cats would have seemed too far gone to save, or might have been put down for space or convenience at some facilities, but Phoenix showed a warm spirit and will to live, and was taken to the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego by a rescue partner on Wednesday. Phoenix’s front feet were swollen, cracked and bleeding, his tail, ears and nose were red, raw and covered in a burning acrid chemical.
Staff at Helen Woodward Animal Center are impressed by the kitten’s will and touched by his trustful and loving nature. A blog post about Phoenix at the center’s website says, ” In response to the compassionate care of Center workers, the delicate feline has been treating staff members to gentle nuzzles and soft purrs. In fact, he even attempts to lovingly knead on the arms and chests of his new-found friends.” Staff are amazed that Phoenix survived his encounter with the dangerous chemical, more so when they see him nuzzle and hear him purr.”
“We can’t be certain whether the chemicals were purposely poured on the body of this kitten, or not,” stated Helen Woodward Veterinarian Dr. Stephanie Oba. “Unfortunately, we do know that the acid burns were from a man-made product and it’s incredibly upsetting to see the harm it has done to such an innocent creature. I’m glad to say that he will survive it, but he has quite a bit of healing to do.”
The Helen Woodward Animal Center Facebook page uploaded a photo of Phoenix with this caption today: “We would love to give staff members, who working hard to heal Phoenix’s wounds, your warm wishes for their dedication. Can you leave words of encouragement to Phoenix and our medical staff?
