Sweet Snowey survives house fire, is found the following day

Snowey, shown here, was thought to have perished in the fire that destroyed her family’s second floor apartment in Tauranga New Zealand one day last week. The family lost all of their possessions and other pets, and thought Snowey was gone, too.

A contractor found Snowey sitting on the grass on the morning following the fire, singed all over and with her eyes shut tight. She is thought to have jumped from the second floor of the burning building, unseen.

The Tauranga SPCA will see to Snowey’s medical needs and has her in foster care for the several weeks she is expected to need to recover. Snowy’s ear tips were burned, along with her paw pads.  SPCA animal welfare officer Jason Blair, who went to the scene, said that Snowy was very calm and receptive to the care and attention she received at the vet when she was rushed there from the scene of the fire.

The SPCA has assumed the cost of Snowey’s care, along with tending to her for several weeks, in consideration of her family’s dire circumstances and the losses they have suffered from the fire. The cat will receive round the clock attention from the veterinary nurse who is fostering her. Snowey’s paws are not beginning to heal as quickly as had been hoped, so she requires ongoing medical care as she recovers.

While the vet has provided care at a reduced rate, the Tauranga SPCA is accepting donations from the public to assist with Snowey’s care. She will be returned to her family when she is ready.

The fire is thought to have been caused when the family’s four year old got ahold of a lighter and set fire to a bed. Hopefully, the child will prevented from starting fires in the future.
