Hoda and Kathie Lee’s Today show hour hosted the 5 winners of its Cutest Pets Contest last week. Smoky, from Hickory, NC was the one cat alongside four dogs. Thanks, Smoky!

Smoky beat out 50,000 other cute entries to place fourth in the contest that brought him and his dad to New York last week. Smoky and Michael Farmer live near Hickory, North Carolina and enjoyed their trip to the city and stay in a nice hotel that went along with the television appearance.

Back when the contest was announced, Michael sent in a photo of  Smoky he had taken on his cell phone. When Smoky was picked to be in the top ten, Michael posted at Facebook and had people from his church and workplace vote for his adorably handsome 9 months old cat.

Michael found out last Monday that Smoky had made the top five, and the two flew to New York on Wednesday for the Thursday appearance.

Smoky is living proof that shelter pets are true winners in every way. Michael and his partner Robert McMillan rescued him from the Catawba County Animal Shelter shortly after another cat perished in a house fire.

Here’s the Today segment from last Thursday. Smoky doesn’t get much time, but he rocks his monkey sweater and represents for shelter cats everywhere.
