A Florida cat is on the mend thanks to the pit bull that saved her life when she was attacked by coyotes.
Kitty lives in Seminole, Florida with her petmom Sherree Lewis and Jack the pit bull dog, who Sherree is caring for while her son Peter is deployed with the US military in Afghanistan. Both animals are rescues.
Sherree now considers Jack a hero after he scared off two coyotes who had gotten hold of Kitty and were shaking her violently out in the yard.
“As I was walking to the door, I could see the coyotes over here,” Sherree pointed out to a local news crew. “One had her by the neck and the other had her by the tail. I didn’t know Jack could run that fast. He was on them so fast,” she said.
The coyotes dropped Kitty and ran, and she was rushed to the vet.
Kitty has a broken tooth and is being treated for brain swelling, and she is not yet able to walk again, though she is expected to do so. Jack stays close by and stands guard.
Other animals in the neighborhood have disappeared altogether. Sherree and her family have called in a trapper, who is setting traps for the coyotes in the mangrove trees behind the house.
Sherree is convinced Jack’s motive in rushing the coyotes was to save his little friend.
“He likes other dogs he wouldn’t have done that if there were dogs out there. It was like he knew the difference,” she said, continuing, “Jack is a hero. He saved the kitty’s life and he just shows how good dogs can be. Big dogs can protect you, especially if something like this happens.”
