Cafe Liberty social club in Queens is closing, and a neighborhood rescuer is looking for a home for the club’s mascot, a black cat named Obama.

Cafe Liberty is on its way out as the aging and diminishing membership cannot afford to keep the doors open any longer. Known for its past mob ties, the club always had a membership of regular neighborhood guys alongside the mobsters. Today the mob affiliated guys are gone and a small group of men on fixed incomes cannot afford to keep their neighborhood hangout going.

Local rescuer Regina Massaro of SNIP (Spay Neuter Intervention Project) provided the club with the cat in 2006 after they’d lost the previous mascot. He was renamed Obama in 2008. Regina appears in the video below, and notes that she’s pleased to have gotten advance notice so she can find Obama a good home, hopefully before the club closes down.
