A Lexington, KY man who did the right thing for a cat he couldn’t avoid hitting when it ran into the road is being thanked by the community of animal lovers, who appreciate his decency in going all out to help the cat and are themselves inspired to help.
After the automobile accident that injured the cat on Henry Clay Boulevard in Lexington, Ben Allen took the cat to an animal hospital, authorized surgery, and took responsibility for the bill for the cat’s medical care.
He then posted the cat’s photo to Lost and Found Pets of Lexington, Ky on Facebook, in hopes of locating the animal’s family.
Ben Allen wrote to Lost and Found Pets of Lexington, Ky yesterday when he posted the photo, saying:
“This morning at around 8am, I was driving down Henry Clay Blvd. and hit a cat running across the street. I stopped the car and pulled him from the street–he was still breathing but obviously hurt. After trying to check with a neighbor for his owner, I rushed him over to Chevy Chase Animal Clinic. He’s still there and I’m in contact with them. It looks like he might be okay and pull through. If you are the owner or know who might be, please send me a private message or comment here as soon as you can!
“Update: According to the vet, little guy is now recovering from surgery they performed on his jaw this afternoon. He also has a broken pelvis. He’ll be staying there for a day or two so they can observe him. Please send your love his way.
“I’m taking on the cost, no problem, though a few folks have come forward with some donations to the vet. Amazing kindness and generosity from everyone here. We’re hoping to still find the owner, but will care for the little guy at our home. Not sure about long term just yet, but we’ll make sure he’s somewhere happy and safe.”
Lost and Found Pets of Lexington, Ky ” target=”_blank”>wrote at Facebook last night with an update and an appeal, saying: “CAT HIT BY CAR UPDATE***** Ok folks, do you want to be a HERO for this cat hit by a car today. A gracious man by the name of Ben Allen, who hit the cat as it darted so quickly in front of his car, stopped scooped him up and drove him to the vet in Chevy Chase. We think the cat will pull through and he did have surgery for a broken jaw.
“I’m amazed that Ben is taking on the costs as so far we have no owner. PLEASE if you can donate to help Ben’s vet bill that would be great and you can call Chevy Chase vet clinic with your donation under Ben’s name. A few have offered to do this and I know we have so many awesome fans who like to do something!”
Ben said earlier today, “Thursday Afternoon Update: I visited with the cat and the team of folks at Chevy Chase Animal Clinic earlier today. He’s resting comfortably thanks to their efforts. According to the surgeon there, it looks like the cat will indeed recover from his injuries. WKYT also did a story on the cat this morning and the report will probably air tonight from 5-7pm if you’d like to watch it. CCAC also mentioned how many folks have stopped by with donations to the bill. Once more, it’s amazing all of your kindness and generosity. And please, if anyone has any more leads on an owner, just post them here [to Lost and Found Pets of Lexington, Ky] and I’ll follow up as soon as I can. Thank you so much!!!”
Ben Allen’s actions have not only helped a cat; they have restored many people’s faith in human decency, and have inspired some to help.
The good feelings Ben Allen have inspired are spreading further tonight, after WKYT’s news report on the story, which includes footage with Ben Allen talking about what happened. WKYT’s Sean Moody said, “Of all the stories I’ve done, this is one of my favorites,” and the news team called Ben Allen a class act.
