A nursing 2 year old Siamese mix Mama cat named Nessie at the SPCA of Brevard in Titusville, Florida has adopted two premature, newborn chihuahua puppies into her litter. Two of the Mama dog’s litter of 4 puppies died and she failed to show interest in the remaining two. Shelter staff turned to Nessie the cat in their search for a surrogate mother for the tiny babies.

Adoption coordinator Debra Cantwell says the babies will probably become bonded with one another and she expects the kittens to grow up liking dogs and the puppies to grow up liking cats.

The S.P.C.A. of North Brevard Adoption Center and Clinic said on Tuesday, March 25: “Today, a pregnant Chihuahua we have in the intake had preemie pups; a couple didn’t make it and the mama wasn’t taking to these puppies. So, we moved the two surviving pups over to another nursing mom…

“Nessy had kittens 5 days ago and has accepted the two puppies as her own. A mother’s love has no bounds!

“Please keep these puppies in your thoughts as they have a long road ahead of them, but with a surrogate mama like Nessy, they are in good “paws”.”
