Animal control workers brought a sad discovery to the Dove Lewis Animal Hospital on Friday. A bucket taped shut with a litter of five kittens in it was found at an intersection in the Portland, OR suburb of Gresham. Only one of the kittens survived. In the aftermath of the tragic end for the others, veterinary staffers are doing their best to help the lone little survivor recover and thrive.
The 6-8 week old kitten left in the 5 lb. bucket along with his four littermates is doing well after being treated at DoveLewis for an upper respiratory infection and fleas.
He has a good appetite, is doing very well in light of his terrible ordeal, and is expected to make a full recovery.
After he is fully treated and cleared, the kitten will go into foster care. Once he is big enough, at three pounds, he will be made available for adoption through the Multnomah County Animal Services shelter. Considering the sad end his littermates faced, it is extra important that this kitten goes on to have the best possible life.
Veterinary staffers say the surviving kitten is amazingly full of life and love.
Multnomah County Animal Services is investigating the case and asks that anyone with information contact them. Animal services and veterinary employees feel that the outcome of the incident for most of the kittens, at least, was intentional.
Below is a video report on the case.
