Six kittens were rescued last week when a transfer station employee heard their cries.
Thomaston, Maine transfer station employee Steven Gregoire rescued the six little kittens from behind an electrical panel on the wall at the facility on June 18.
Local resident Sharon Spaulding was dropping off her trash around the time of the rescue and took the kittens to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, which is located nearby, also in Thomaston.
At the shelter, the kittens were placed in the care of a recent mom cat named Mittens, who the Humane Society said at Facebook, “graciously accepted the role of surrogate mom to the “hopper” kittens.” The babies are being called the “hopper kittens” because of their proximity to the hopper at the trash facility when they were found.
Mittens suffered a terrible injury before coming to the shelter, but both she and the six rescued kittens are on track for good lives from now on.
Rescuer Steven Gregoire has already put his name in to adopt one of the kittens when they are ready in about six weeks. They will stay in foster car with the mama cat until they are available.
