A Good Samaritan in Spokane Valley, Washington rescued a kitten Sunday night when he took out his trash and heard cries coming from the dumpster at his apartment complex. The lone orange tabby was wrapped into three plastic grocery bags and left to die.
Taylor Lucas rescued the sweetly handsome kitten, who was suffocating in the grocery bags, and searched through the trash in case there were others, but there was just the one. He spent the night cleaning the kitten and nursing it back to health.
Taylor told KREM 2 On Your Side on Monday that he was baffled and still in shock after the distressing discovery.
“There’s nothing worse at all,” he said. “They can’t even speak for themselves. I’m not sure how someone would throw them in there.”
Taylor is unable to keep the kitten because the apartment complex management forbids pets. He called local animal rescue organizations Monday morning and says he was shocked by their responses. He told KREM that SCRAPS (Spokane County regional Animal Protection Service) said they couldn’t take the kitten because she was less than 8 weeks old, but KREM was able to sort out what SCRAPS calls a misunderstanding.
“I think that there was a misunderstanding with our after -hours answering service,” said Nancy Hill with SCRAPS. “We take all stray cats and dogs.”
Taylor says, wherever the kitten ends up, he hopes the rest of her life will be better than the beginning.
“She’s a pretty good little kitty,” he said.
