It all began with a compelling picture and the words “George is a cat that prefers to stand on 2 legs.”
We first saw photos of George after getting reeled in by the cute pic and tag line while browsing Reddit yesterday morning, and by mid-afternoon noticed that he’d become an internet star and the subject of several news feature stories.
It was inevitable, of course, given his adorably photogenic little face and penchant for getting up onto his hind legs.
Reddit user Egzo had posted photos of George before, but the effect of the album of standing-George images was more cuteness than could be viewed with a bit of amusement and then forgotten.
Thanks to the overwhelming response to the photos at Reddit, George had an Instagram account before the end of the day. You can check him out at George2Legs.
Part of the conversation at Reddit centered on George’s resemblance to actor and advertising pitchman Wilford Brimley, with George’s good natured petdad writing: “Haha yeah he definitely does [look permanently disgruntled, as one commenter said]but he is the sweetest cat I’ve ever known. Really bizarre, but sweet.”
“Oh man.. I really can’t stop laughing you are like the 4th person in an hour to call him Wilford Brimley. I can’t even look at him now. When he climbs on to me every time my alarm goes off it will be haunting. It will be like Wilford Brimley climbs onto my chest every morning and nuzzles me.”
“Thanks a lot, now I really wish I had named him Diabeetus.”
