In the overnight hours between last Saturday night and Sunday morning, fire broke out at Alexandra Marlin’s home in the town of Montelimar, in the Drôme region in Southwestern France, and her cat Boulette is being thanked for saving the 11 people who were inside of the multifamily structure.
Ms. Marlin was awakened by scratching sounds Boulette was making in the attic, near the fire, and was able to call the fire department and alert her neighbors to the danger. In the confusion over getting everyone outside safely, Ms. Marlin lost track of Boulette, and she was feared to have died in the fire. Boulette’s petmom and the other residents of the four family home were saddened to think that the cat who’d alerted them to danger might be the one casualty of the fire.
Late in the day on Sunday, Boulette was found. She had escaped without injury and was reunited with her grateful petmom, who lost everything but her cat in the fire.
Ms. Marlin is quoted in Le Dauphine Libéré saying: “The bonds of affection that bind us are even stronger than before. I have more respect for her. I believe that she certainly saved my life and that of my neighbors; it will count for ever in the way I look at her.”
Neighbors have offered to keep the 10 year old cat supplied with treats.
