A beautiful two year old tuxie cat named Basket was very lucky to be rescued by the MSPCA after being found at a Cape Cod supermarket last month. Thanks to her rescue by the Cape Cod branch of the animal welfare organization, a life-threatening medical condition was discovered and treated, and Basket can now look forward to a long and healthy life in a good home.
Injured Cat Dumped at Grocery Store Rescued by MSPCA-Centerville
Centerville, Mass., June 14, 2013 – Less than two months after finding a permanent home for two young cats found abandoned in a shopping cart at Hyannis, Mass. grocery store, the MSPCA-Centerville today announced it has rescued a sweet two-year-old tuxedo cat that was dumped outside the Market Basket grocery store in Bourne on May 9.
The cat, affectionately named “Basket” by the MSPCA’s Centerville adoption center staff, was evaluated by the center’s veterinary staff, who grew concerned over her abnormal breathing. Diagnostic tests revealed Basket was suffering from a diaphragmatic hernia—a condition in which her internal organs had forced their way into her chest cavity by way of a hole in her chest wall. The condition is very serious, and fatal if not surgically corrected. The veterinary team wasted no time in soliciting help from the Cape Cod Cat veterinary practice, who conducted the surgery to repair the hernia.
Basket’s Bright Future
Her surgery behind her, Basket is recovering at the Centerville adoption center where staffers hope her story will encourage a potential adopter to take her home. “Imagine dealing with such a terrible injury while at the same time juggling temperature swings and the constant threat from cars and predators,” said Mary Sarah Baker, director of the MSPCA-Centerville adoption center. “We’re so glad to have been able to help Basket get to this stage and we’ll do everything we can to get her into the loving home she deserves.”
The MSPCA-Centerville relies on donations from the public to fund the medical care costs of animals like Basket. Her care has been paid for through the MSPCA-Centerville’s Guardian Angel Fund, which pays the medical care costs for animals found wandering outside or were subjected to abuse or surrendered by owners who could no longer afford the medical care they required.
