Cats.  We all know how quirky and lovable they are.  But how much do we really know about them? Here are ten interesting facts about cats that may surprise you.

1. Cats’ incredible sense of hearing is due to the fact that they possess 32 different muscles in each ear, helping them to pinpoint precisely where a noise is coming from.

2. Cats purr at the frequency of 26 hertz, which apparently aids the regeneration of tissue and stimulates the repair of brittle bones. And cats don’t only purr when they’re happy, they also purr to signal stress or fear.

3. A wild fact about purring is that it’s a complete mystery. Scientists know it involves the larynx and diaphragm muscles but they’re not exactly sure how those muscles work together to create the sound.

4. Cats spend 70 percent of their lives asleep. In comparison, humans sleep about 30 percent of the time.

5. A Japanese study found that cats are actually capable of recognizing their owners’ voices — they just actively choose to ignore what the owner is saying. So it’s not just your imagination.

6. Cats are incapable of tasting sweetness, they lack the taste receptors for it.

9. The oldest cat ever, Creme Puff, lived to be 38. He lived on bacon, eggs, and broccoli. Creme Puff’s owner had another cat that lived to 34.

10. A ten-year study from the University of Minnesota Stroke Center found that people who owned cats were 40 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 30 percent less likely to have strokes.
