Nekoland is the work of French photographer Alexandre Bonnefoy who documents the lives of the alley cats of Japan. His cats are seen in repose, prowling, napping in odd places and taking advantage of handouts. His work is collected in his book, Nekoland, une vie de chat au Japon, available on Amazon.
There is definitely a connection to people whenever animals are used in advertisements. Consider the Golden Retriever series for Subaru. Those commercials appeal to not only dog lovers, but car owners, and, generally, anyone with a sense of humor.
I had occasion to visit this amazing sanctuary recently. The Living Free Animal Sanctuary was founded by Emily Jo Beard whose inspiration was Albert Schweitzer. Like Schweitzer, she believed that justice was meant for all, humans and animals alike. It was moral courage Emily believed in, standing up for animal rights as a guardian, not an oppressor.

The veteran found Hemi back in 2009 on his engine block in North Carolina and the cat not only became a family member, joining wife Jennifer and two daughters, but also became a companion for Robert.
