The photo was heart breaking: a forlorn,  frightened cat crying sitting curbside on a Brooklyn street. Next to him are a discarded pillow and litter box that were thrown out along with the abandoned kitty. “He reportedly sat there crying for two hours, before he was scared away by a street sweeper,” according to the posting.  The photo was published last week on Facebook, and shared by several thousand people, setting off a chain reaction of outrage at the person responsible and sympathy for the cat. “I’m so angry I can’t think straight,” said one poster. “Makes me want to cry,” said another. “Terrible what was done to this poor kitty.”

The cat was abandoned on Nostrand Avenue between Lefferts and Sterling. And it wasn’t long before the hunt was on. New York City animal angels sprang into action. Michael Dietrich of HOPE Staten Island Animal Rescue went to Brooklyn to look for the cat. And a small army of caring neighbors and members of Flatbush Area Team For Cats, known as FAT Cats looked high and low. But still no kitty. “We got reported sightings but were never able to act fast enough. Then this AM, the call came in from a local TNR advocate and cat rescuer in retirement, Karen Oh, [who] found him in her backyard.” Everyone involved was thrilled.

“Here at Flatbush Area Team for Cats, we are ecstatic to give a happy update to last week’s story of Nostrand, the cat abandoned on Nostrand Ave. We immediately rushed over to find, that yes indeed, it was him!”

“We immediately brought him to get vetted, and screened for a microchip. No microchip, but we are happy to say he is a healthy one-year-old male, FeLV/FIV negative, who was treated for fleas.” Hundreds of worried and upset people who had seen the photo of Nostrand, including this writer for LifeWithCats, were incredibly relieved to hear he had been located and was in good hands. “Thank you! I could not rest,” said one poster. Here’s a photo of Nostrand finally getting the love and comfort he deserves.

FAT Cats shared the good news and is requesting donations. “Please help us with his vet bill, even a small amount is greatly appreciated. https://goo.gl/ZKwato.  “Thank you to everyone for your prayers, good thoughts, and efforts to find Nostrand. We will be contacting people that offered to foster/adopt him. If you are interested in him or any of our other adult cats please contact us at [email protected].”

  1. In all fairness to the person who took the photo, cats can be extremely difficult to catch–even if they’re very tame–when they are in an unfamiliar situation. One of the abandoned house cats that I’ve taken in from a nearby neighborhood took me almost a month to catch; and she was a tame house cat.

  2. It just breaks my heart to see someone treat their cat like that I can hardly see to type this from my tears, Thank god he was found,

  3. Thank you to the volunteers who never gave up on this guy and FOUND him! You are truly angels who walk among us. I hope that people will honor the Flatbush Area Team for their hard work with a monetary donation to help care all the cats they save.

  4. Thank goodness you found him and he’s safe. The morons who threw him out like yesterdays leftovers need flogging

  5. It got to me a lot cause I am a cat person and I cry/ brush into tears when I see pictures like this. Glad he was found and is now safe

  6. I could never do something like this to my furby fubu people are so fd up I feel quilty blocking my bedroom window from the heat she has to use other window n spare room it’s sad let alone throw her out I’d take this kitty but iam arizona bullhead city

  7. Poor baby- heartless heartless human who did this, and yes, they should be put by the side of the road homeless to know what it feels like! After taking my mother’s 6 cats in after she died- I probably would not hesitate to take this guy in too. Her cats suffered in losing her, I cannot imagine them losing a good home too-

  8. I am so glad they found the precious kitty and he was okay! The person who did this to the cat is evil and sickening. I love kittens and cats and also dogs and other animals. At the same time, I would hope all of you who speak up rightly so for the cats are also against abortion which is baby murder. Don’t be a hypocrite. Love the animals and love the human children, too. Thank you.

Jesus loves the cats and dogs and Heaven is full of them all. Dogs and cats can be resurrected and live in Heaven with we saved born again Christians. If you are not saved please trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for eternal life now. Thank you.

  9. Enough with the religious rhetoric!! Abortion during the first trimester is NOT murder. If u think something the size of a pea is a baby, then you are an idiot. Why bring up this subject when we are discussing the disgusting behavior towards innocent animals? I’m so sick of people bringing up babies for every discussion. Pay attention right now…babies are only innocent for a short time. They grow to be adult garbage like most of the rest of the population.

  10. Well said, and as a Christian, and a serious cat lover, I SO agree with your sentiments! I do believe if God created such special creatures for us, He can do anything he chooses in Heaven too! And, yes, human life is also something to be protected!

  11. I so happy and relieved there are good people out there and God bless them who cared so deeply to this poor cat..

  12. By the broken bits of furniture there with him, I’m guessing the cat did something to the item of furniture and the [expletive deleted] who had him got mad and threw him out there that way with all his stuff. I think if I had one real wish it would be that humans would no longer have power to harm innocent animals. I believe that those who do need psychological help, but unfortunately this will never happen – or at least only so rarely as to make little difference to their victims.

  13. I would do the same thing for a family member too, Linda! This is the difference between caring human responses versus sociopathic behavior to not care in the least and dump a cat at the curb like trash and drive away. I can’t imagine what was going through his mind as his so called “family” drove away!! Now, he can have the home and love he deserves! Those who searched and found him (and the woman who does tnr work too) are his angels! It was perfect for him to end up in the tnr backyard too! yay

  15. Bett, I noticed that furniture and other stuff sitting next to him too, and wondered if it was a connection as punishment! How horrid if so..This is how you treat a beloved cat? Sickening…They should never have a pet again..Now, to make sure of that, in a perfect world, creeps like this have their license plate#s entered into a database, and blocked from having contact with any animal..Be charged, fined and serve some days in jail would be great in a “perfect world”…

  16. What do you do when no one will take them there’s nowhere to take them or if there is they want nothing but money

  17. This anti-choice abortion troll should be blocked and banned from this page. Her agenda is not appropriate here. Admins?

  18. @Terri….”People suck sometimes?” With the exception of people who actually care about animals, most humans S U C K ALL THE TIME!

  19. Happy the cat was found but what is wrong with the rest of the world? I’m sorry but if I’m walking down the street and I see a kitty meowing who obviously looks abandoned, I’m springing into action! 2 hours and then it got scared away by a street sweeper? Some people are so self absorbed they wouldn’t notice if a human needed help. Wake up humanity!
