Talk about the perfect blended family. Bobby the Chihuahua is thriving after becoming one with a litter of kittens and super mom, Gwen the cat. After two-day-old Bobby’s mother was killed by a car, he desperately needed a mother who could provide him with milk and lots of cuddle time. But no lactating dogs were available to adopt him, says Faith O’Georgia of the Michigan Humane Society.
“They had a mom cat that was still nursing, and they thought–genius idea–to maybe see if this puppy could go along with these guys,” says O’Georgia. “And see if mommy cat would treat him like one of her own. And it actually worked!”
“It’s a misconception that cats and dogs can’t get along, and as we see at the Michigan Humane Society, they can often become loving family members,” Ryan McTigue, a spokesperson for MHS explains in the video on the organization’s Facebook page. The sweet video of Bobby playing with his feline foster family has been a big hit, racking up 60,000 views and 11,000 shares. “Mother cat Gwen’s acceptance of Bobby as an addition to her litter of kittens is a wonderful example of that!” says McTigue.
When Bobby is able to eat solid food, he will be integrated into a new foster family of dogs so he can be properly socialized, according to his donation page. In the meantime, he’s soaking up a lot of feline affection and bonding with his kitten siblings.
“His ‘litter mates,’ especially one small kitten who follows Bobby everywhere, will be sad to see him go.”
