Things get lost from time to time.  Particularly if they are small.  Or you have a lot of them.  Rubberbands, paperclips, coins, and even hair ties will often find their way to the floor, underneath something, or in the trash can and, because those kinds of items seem like they are always readily available, they might not be given much thought.  However, over a dozen errant hair ties seemed to have been the treat of choice for a Siamese named Kitty.

Kitty was brought into the MSPCA-Angell by his owner, who surrendered him, because something was not right about his behavior.  The cat was not eating, vomiting, and spells of lethargy.  After examination, the doctors discovered 14 hairties lodged in Kitty’s intestines.  Dr. Emma-Leigh Pearson performed the life and death emergency surgery due to extreme distress.  In an interview with PetMD, Andrea Bessler, a lead technician who assisted Dr. Pearson, said the procedure was two hours and included a gastronomy, an incision into the stomach through which to remove the hair ties, a resection, and anastomosis, the surgical reconnection of the intestine sections.

Some pets may eat foreign objects that have dropped on the floor and items like string, plastic bags, even hair, can create an issue.  It is important to be mindful of any pet who ingests something that is not part of a normal, healthy diet, and while serious cases like Kitty’s are not particularly common place, anytime an animal eats something that is out of place, it is important to contact your veterinarian.

The good news is that Kitty is recovering well and now looking for his forever home.  Because he is so sweet, the MSPCA is hoping that will happen very soon for him.
