A kitten got herself into quite a jam when her head became stuck in the drainage hole at the bottom of a dumpster.
Indy’s little head was all that could be seen from outside the large industrial waste receptacle in Maryborough West, Queensland, Australia last Thursday, as it poked through the small round opening meant to allow for drainage.
Workers at the site called the RSPCA after discovering the kitten, and she was rescued in a joint effort by the Queensland RSPCA and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services staff.
Rescuers had to apply a soapy lubricant to free the distressed little cat, whose head was wedged into the small opening.
Maryborough Fire Station Officer John Pappas said that with firefighters both outside and inside the bin, they were able to carefully ease the kitten’s head back through the hole. The firefighters then passed her into the waiting arms of RSPCA Inspector Penny Flaherty.
Ms Flaherty took Indy (who she named) to the vet and then had the kitten spend the night with her at her home before delivering her to the Brisbane RSPCA, where she continued her recovery under the veterinary staff’s care. She is expected to be sore for a little while but will make a full recovery.
Indy will be available for adoption when she is fully recovered and ready.

Yesterday RSPCA Inspector Penny Flaherty and the Maryborough Queensland Fire and Emergency Services – QFES joined forces to rescue a stray kitten who had her head trapped in the drain hole of an industrial bin. This tiny feline was plucked to safety by the delicate hands of QFS officers and, although very cold, she appeared otherwise unharmed.
Now named Indi, the tabby manx kitten, was quickly conveyed to Walker Street Veterinary Practice for examination. This lucky girl got to spend the night being pampered at Inspector Penny’s home. She’s now in vet care at our Brisbane RSPCA RSPCA Animal Care Campus and enjoying some much needed TLC. We look forward to seeing her available for foster or adoption very soon!
