Burned Kitten Phoenix Recovers at Caring Vet Clinic

Phoenix, our little fire survivor, is continuing to make us love her more. We think that the treatments in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists helped her healing. Her wounds are progressing - right now they look raw but we can see new hair growing in already. She is seeing well and is smelling things to investigate them. Thank you so much for the happy thoughts, support, and wishes for continued recovery!

Phoenix was severely burned in a tragic five alarm fire that destroyed buildings in an under-construction apartment complex in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston, Texas on March 25.  She was discovered following the fire by a good Samaritan who picked her up, put her into a box and sought help.

Cathy Cordes lives directly across the street and brought the burned kitty to the Montrose Veterinary Clinic, which is located very close to the scene of the fire. Ms. Cordes said a few days later at Facebook: “She has stolen our heart and I am so glad she showed up on our doorstep for help.”

“My dogs kept smelling under the toolbox and we didn’t know what was going on and we went and looked and saw this cat under the toolbox meowing,” she told KPRC Channel 2 News.

The kitty, who was named Phoenix at the vets, did not have a microchip but her rescuers hoped her family would be found.  Flyers read: “FOUND burned friendly kitten dislocated from fire.” No one has come forward so far to reclaim the sweet girl.

Phoenix smelled like ashes and burnt hair when she arrived at the clinic, but she was purring. She is recovering well and benefitted from treatments in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, to speed her healing.

Montrose Veterinary Clinic has made updates on Phoenix and her progress at their Montrose Veterinary Clinic Facebook page. We have shared photos and updates from that page here, with the updates found in the captions. You can follow the page for further updates on Phoenix. Her recovery will take time, due to the nature of burn injuries and the healing process.

April 2: Our Little Phoenix has been doing very well. She loves her face rubbed and is always excited by food. The kind people at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists have volunteered the use of their hyperbaric oxygen chamber to speed up her wound healing. Phoenix has started her treatments there this morning. Thank you so much for all of the support and care you all have shown. We will continue to keep everyone updated on her progress!

March 28: We are glad to report that Phoenix has been fairing very well each day. She has over come a fever, eating and drinking on her own, and has used her litter box successfully! We want to thank everyone who expressed concerns and support for her care. Next step will be to heal her paws with wound management and bandages. We will continue to keep everybody updated.

My heart goes out to Phoenix. It hard to think a kitty hurt this badly coming in purring. He is a strong cat and if the owner doesn’t find him I hope a deserving family does.
Thanks to everyone caring for him.

Bless you sweet baby kitty and those of you who are caring for Phoenix. It breaks my heart to see such injuries on an animal, but seeing the recovery is rewarding! I wish for the best for this angel and thank you to everyone who is involved with her and her process

I’m so pained every time I look at this poor, sweet kitty. Phoenix is a warrior and a victim of a terrible thing!!! I know that there is a special human family for her when she is ready! Thank you to the beautiful people that are nursing this baby back to life. What a story.

What a brave Cat Phoenix is, my heart cries when I look at what this kitty had indured. I life in Europe, in the Netherlands, otherwise I would had love to give this great kitty a new home.
I pray that Phoenix gets the new home with family who loves him, as soon he is able to. If any Cat deserves that, it’s Phoennix.
Hope You let us know when he does so.
