Maverick had broken legs and ribs after being tossed from a car in June. Thanks to the group that took him in, he is healed, is running around, and is happy in a good home now.

The Champaign, Illinois group Cat Snap (Champaign-Area Trap Spay/Neuter and Adoption Program) took responsibility for Maverick’s care when he came to them as an two month old kitten who’d been callously tossed from a moving car. His two front legs and some ribs were broken.

A Good Samaritan picked up the injured kitten and took him to a vet. From there, he was turned over to Cat Snap.

Cat Snap took Maverick to the University of Illinois College of Medicine’s veterinary hospital, where x-rays showed several broken bones.  A procedure placed pins in the more severely broken left leg to aid  in its healing, and the kitten’s right leg was allowed to heal on its own.

There were moments of worry as the kitten, on high doses of painkillers, had trouble breathing, but he pulled through just fine.

Now four months old, Maverick recently left foster care and was adopted into a good home.

Susan Norris, Cat Snap’s president, told The News-Gazette: “He’s just an amazing little guy.”

“The thing is, this kitten was one of the nicest kittens we’ve ever had,” Norris said, after noting that people do not have to resort to acts of cruelty when they are frustrated with their pets or do not want them any longer.

The feature in the News-Gazette told Maverick’s story in advance of a benefit to help cover the cost of his care. A “Music for Maverick”  fundraiser featuring local bands will be held from 7-11 p.m. this Thursday at Mike ‘N Molly’s, in Champaign, with all proceeds being put toward Maverick’s $1,900 medical bill.

Maverick’s story is told in this touching video:

What is CATSNAP?

(From the organization’s website)

Established in 2005, CATsNAP seeks to reduce pet overpopulation and to improve the welfare of animals in the greater Champaign County Illinois area. Specifically, we strongly advocate that all animals are spayed and neutered, regardless of breed, sex, or age. By spaying/neutering, we are reducing the number of cats and dogs born into situations of inadequate care and abuse. We are also limiting the numbers of unwanted animals relinquished to shelters, where they are often euthanized for lack of space.

This program offers spay and neuter assistance and basic veterinary treatment – including flea and parasite treatment and routine vaccinations – to needy or unowned animals, typically cats. It also provides humane education to community and civic groups on the care of animals and the importance of spaying/neutering in population control.

The organization also has a limited intake, no-kill adoption program. Most animals are transferred from municipal animal control facilities. All animals are in foster homes or up at the Champaign PETsMART. Animals are never euthanized for space.

  1. Hello I am very moved by this story… I have been browsing the web looking for a method to rehabilitate abused kittens, my after a few days ago rescued a kitty with the exact same story, only that this kitty was tosed out in one of the main roads in México city.

I was hoping to get some tips on how to help him, we guess he was severely abused because he is q very agresive cat, you cant even get near him, he must be 2-3 months old, we took him to the vet and his body is fine, but we dont know how to fix his agresiveness…
