Cheeto the cat is back with his family again after spending 3 days stuck on the roof of the San Leandro, CA Post Office building.  Cheeto was rescued, checked out by a vet and returned to his family thanks to social networking and the efforts of volunteers.

Julie Gardner, who first noticed the cat and tried to get help, Bebe Duarte, Groveway Veterinary Hospital, Bailey Crane and Equipment, and Robert Souza of Castro Valley/San Leandro News all played their part in helping when a cat was discovered to be stuck on a roof with no one helping him.

After 3 days with no help from local officials and agencies, the volunteers successfully networked the cat’s cause and made the rescue.

“I’m not a big fan of Facebook,”  Dolphin Graphics owner Ken Carbone told the local NBC news affiliate,“But today, something hugely positive came of it.”  Bebe Duarte works at Dolphin Graphics and took to Facebook following Julie’s lead, networking in the stranded cat’s behalf , and was able to reach out to a graphics company client with the right equipment to make the rescue.

Oakland based Doc Bailey Construction Equipment, Inc. came out after Bebe Duarte messaged them via Facebook and made the rescue using a bucket crane.

San Leandro News video journalist Robert Souza  also came to the scene and captured the rescue, then followed along to Groveway Vet hospital, where the cat was taken to be checked out.

At Groveway vet, Dr. Andrew Moffatt and RVT Rob DuBois gave the cat a clean bill of health, administered an antibiotic to guard against infection from a slight graze wound, provided much needed food and water, and did a routine microchip scan. The scan found a chip, Cheeto’s very relieved family was found, and he later went home. Dr. Moffatt provided Cheeto’s care at no charge.

Below is the introduction to Robert Souza’s video report, followed by the video.

“All Volunteer Tabby Rescue”

“An East Bay crane company and a Castro Valley Veterinarian volunteered their time and effort to rescue an orange tabby that was stranded atop the entryway of the San Leandro Post Office for three days.

“Residents contacted local officials and agencies who did not respond to requests to help bring the cat down, so social media and a network of friends made the rescue happen by calling in favors and good old teamwork.

“It’s an inspiring story that shows what can be done to help a stranded cat in need.”
