Felony Cruelty Charge for Man Who Shot Cat and Laughed When Admitting it to Deputies

Morris Covey, of North Fort Myers, FL, is charged with felony cruelty for shooting a kitten named Taylor in the back with a pellet gun at point blank range, causing the animal’s death.
Taylor was found lying injured, with a bullet hole in his back, on Dennis Smith’s front porch. Smith is a self proclaimed cat whisperer who cares for the neighborhood’s cats. The kitten had been paralyzed by the shooting and was euthanized on the vet’s recommendation.
Following the kitten’s death, Smith reported the incident to the police and told them he suspected his neighbor, Morris Covey, as the shooter.
“He said he didn’t like cats and he was going to kill all the cats in the neighborhood,” said Dennis Smith.
When questioned by deputies, Covey reportedly admitted to shooting the kitten, and began laughing. Covey is said to have also told detectives that he keeps a piece of wood in his carport to bash cats (his own reported words are worse) if he catches them on his property.
Dennis Smith said, “It’s awful. It’s disgusting that anybody could do that to a creature like that,” and “He’s just a mean old man.”
Covey was arrested and then released on bond on February 7. His trial is scheduled for March 11.
The Collier Community Cat Coalition on Facebook from nearby Naples, FL posted the link to the booking and charges page for Morris Covey at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office website, in order to spread the word to others in the animal rescue community.

OMG this type of behavior displayed towards animals makes me sick I mean makes my stomach hurt not to mention my heart breaks for these innocent animals. Some how we as in every animal lover of any type, breed across the nation needs to push for harsher penalties and prison time for these sick SOBS in EVERY state needs to have he same laws and the same penalty phase. It is time we all unite and get this done.

You are so very right and I am with you totally. I am a paralegal, and can type any petition necessary and will be glad to do so In any State. I might as well start, here in Oklahoma as we have NO protection by Pigs and certainly the helpless animals don’t. This should have been done by law makers, but it is up to US!!

If there is anything I can sign Petition, etc against this man I am located in Tulsa, Okla and have no way to get to the hearing. I have serious medical issues, but do have all the necessary equiptment to write, sign, etc..any document against this “monster”. I myself have two cats, we had three, and are still morning the loss of little Leo who was only a year old, in that case, he got out a window and was killed by dogs. I hold the owners at fault, not the animals, just like this man needs to go to jail for his terrible loss for no reason. If the court would protect animals against these type of monsters, instead of focusing on people who have done nothing compared to this Please just let me know I will do anything to keep this piece of human garbage in jail/prison. you might want to get the complete story before condemning this man. But I don’t see that you want the truth, all I see are people who want to fill the world with more hate. Wasn’t it Jesus who said let he who is without sin cast the first stone. How can a person have more sympathy for a cat than a human being. I will pray for all of you.
