Spangles the Cross Eyed Kitty has had his own Facebook fan page, where he sometimes models cute costumes, for nearly a year, but the has gained widespread fame since a photo of Pirate Spangles went viral. The pirate themed photo was posted to Facebook on September 18, the day before Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is widely celebrated on the social networking site, and has been popular across the internet over the past 10 days. In a sign that Spangles has gone from internet sensation to mainstream, he was the subject of a short feature at the Today show this morning. He’s gotten coverage at numerous other programs, sites and blogs, as well.
The good natured, photogenic cat, who is adorably cute in a slightly off-kilter way, was born on the 4th of July, and that’s where he got his name.
Petmom Mary Buchanan told a reported with Today that Spangles often wears this tiger hat around the house. If he does not feel like cooperating with a costume, he will jump down and scoot away.
Mary also told Today, “If I’m feeling down or depressed I just look at him and start laughing.” She said, “He lifts people up and makes them feel good.”

Mary writes at the Facebook page: “Spangles loves to take photos! He will pose for me, and let me know when he’s in a glamorous mood. He likes to roam around the house in his little hats and costumes. He has one cross eye, and he was born that way but he can see perfectly fine. He loves to go on walks wearing his harness, watch birds, and play with our 2 small dogs, and other 3 kitties.”
Here is a short on air segment about Spangles. We recommend the story at the program’s website.
Here’s a home video from last October, with Spangles wearing his Unicorn hat, which Mary says is not his favorite outfit.
