One resident in the Camp Ellis beach front section of Saco, ME filed a lawsuit to have community cats removed from the neighborhood, and that one homeowner has been granted the power to decide for the neighborhood whether the cats will or will not stay. The cats have been responsibly managed by other residents until now, but in the next few days Saco’s Animal Control Officer plans to take them away to a shelter. The news report from WCSH Channel 6 says the cats will be taken to the shelter to be put up for adoption, but one of the residents familiar with them says the remaining cats are the truly feral and undomesticated ones. One might assume they, presumably, would be unadoptable.

Residents who have fed and cared for the cats are not pleased and say the cats provided a valuable service. “During the time that they’ve been here, they’ve kept the rat population absolutely at bay, also mouse population too”, said Eleanor Saboski, a supporter of the cats.

Saco police urge residents with owned cats to make sure they are wearing collars if they are outside, to prevent them from being taken away.

  1. Why is it allowed that “ONE”person have say on whether cats in a neighborhood stay or go (sounds fishy), and does that mean they are gonna round the deer etc. up too? I think this is rediculous this person needs to find something to do with his/her time rather than pick on poor defenseless cats that are actually taking care of your rat/mouse problems!

  2. Why does ONE person have the say for them to be taken away.. when more than one want the cats to stay ???? this seems very unfair…
Does this person have ties to city or county government ??? LET THE CATS STAY.. THEY ARE BEING MANAGED & CARED FOR…..

  3. Can someone please STEP-UP against this one person n hire a lawyer for the cats…Were talking about one person against the neighborhood, this is one of those ridiculous lawsuit!!! Someone has to stand -up n be the face for these cats n represent — they’re just cats who have a right to lived too..By putting them in a shelter their sentenced to die — because if they are not adoptable in a certain days they will be put to sleep, THE CITY SHOULD HAVE SOME FUNDING FOR FOR THIS CRITTERS AT LEAST FOR FREE SPAY N NEUTERING N VACCINATION AT LEAST. WE DO HERE IN STOCKTON

  4. Saco feral caretakers I too agreed you should hire a lawyer. You could see if your group could get an injunction against the city’s actions, this would buy time for the cats. As a group you could reach out to your city council and Mayor and advocate for the community cats.

You can argue how costly this is going to be to taxpayers to have to have animal control spend hours and hours trapping and removing the cats to a shelter. Best Friends website has a feral cat calculator that will print out a report for your city with all kinds of useful stats to support your arguments.

If that ONE individual doesn’t want the community cats in the area anymore , they should be the person that has to pay the full bill for the removal and ultimate euthanasia of all the cats.

Allie Cats Allies website also has useful tools to use to advocate for community cats.

Please stand up for the cats of your community.

  5. Has anyone noticed that in the past 20 or so years we have bcome a country that is quick to put our elderly in a nursing home, have our children raised in daycares and throw away or euthanise our animals! Yet we are the ones complaining about human rights in other counties! Good people we have get busy and be heard!
