Phoenix: Burn Victim Cat Rises From the Ashes

Phoenix’s spirit and will to live helped her to overcome injuries suffered when she was burned. The veterinary staffer who adopted her tells the story.

Poor Sizzles… burnt paws – burnt eyes – no whiskers – burnt back – bad state.

It was one of the most distressing cases Coleraine Veterinary Practice manager Yvonne Wreath had seen – a badly burned kitten found in a coal bunker in the autumn of 2011. Sizzles, as she was named by staff, had appalling injuries – her paws resembled red jelly and were covered in maggots, her eyes couldn’t open and her face was badly burned. Staff debated putting her to sleep but decided she deserved a chance having survived so far.

With three months of round-the-clock care, Sizzles came back from the brink and has since been adopted by Yvonne. She now has an inspirational new name in recognition of her amazing recovery – Phoenix. Phoenix is still less than a year old, and has been through much in her short life.

Now Phoenix is one of the Outstanding Rescue Cat category finalists in the 2012 Cats Protection UK National Cat Awards contest.  She was chosen to be a nominee because of her sheer will to survive. The winner will be announced at an awards dinner held at London’s Savoy Hotel on August 16.

Seven weeks into her recovery, on December 31, 2011. Sizzle’s bandages had just come off and her whiskers had begun to grow back.
