The Mysterious Case of Captain Jack

Captain Jack weighed 17 pounds when he came to live with his owner 5 years ago. Despite a strict diet, medical tests and intervention, he is now a whopping 38 pounds.

Carol Nault says that Captain Jack has continued to gain regardless of efforts to help him maintain a healthful weight. The Worcester, MA woman fell in in love with Jack and adopted him after a friend found him living at a junkyard.

Carol told the Worcester Telegram that Jack gets a special diet of three quarters of a can of diet cat food and a third of a cup of dry food daily, with no scraps or treats.

Blood tests for diabetes and thyroid issues came up normal, and Jack spent a month at Abbot Animal Hospital in Worcester, where he gained a pound while under observation and on a strict diet.

At this point the vet thinks Jack’s weight condition might be caused by a hormone problem. Carol says that with her limited income she is not prepared to obtain the additional blood tests that might rule hormone trouble in or out. She has considered giving Jack up for adoption to someone more able to pay for expensive testing and treatment, but says she doesn’t want to lose him.

The video below show’s Jack’s feeble attempts to play. For now there does not appear to be a solution to Captain Jack’s unhealthy condition.

yeah can you ask her to start a chipin fund for him? I would gladly give to it. My cat maggie is an enormous girl. after she had 3 kittens she went on a never ending eating binge that has never stopped. I also though that she was hormonal because she never ate that much but after the babies were born she had a cesarian because her uterous fell out and so they removed everything the uterus, fallopian tubes everything! and that was when she started her eating binge. she is adopted out right now as I moved back from brasil but she is still large marge. the lady who adopted her says she is a busy cat but she just doesnt seem to lose weight.
