#pipekitty Creates a Sensation During Her Rescue

A tiny kitten known in Memphis as Pipe Kitty and across the internet as #pipekitty was rescued after a lengthy effort from city workers, the humane society and plumbing companies.

Nearby residents heard cries for days from the kitten trapped in a narrow access plumbing system below ground in a Memphis neighborhood.

The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County, Greenway Plumbing, Hill Plumbing and the city of Memphis public works department all contributed to the complex effort, which lasted over 15 hours, with the Humane Society and plumbing company workers volunteering their time.

The roadway was blocked off , there was digging, and the  public works crew sent sent a special camera down the pipe on Friday afternoon.
Pipe Kitty was stuck in a pipe that goes 8 feet down and then turns horizontal and crosses the road.

Eventually, Fred Simmons of Greenway Home Services plumbing made the rescue and will adopt the kitten, who is now being called Piper.

During the rescue effort, #pipekitty’s plight spread via Twitter, and through local channel Action News 5′s Facebook page.

One person following the rescue tweeted, “In all seriousness, the best story of the weekend happened over night in Memphis.  #PipeKitty is safe and sound!”

channel 5 video report made after piper was rescued and taken to the vet.
