TV Mascot Joey the Garden Cat to Have Surgery
Joey is a celebrity in Little Rock, and his fans have met news of his leg cancer with concern. Joey’s surgeon talks about the procedure to remove a portion of bone and keep the leg. His prognosis is good.
Joey the Garden Cat has been a part of the THV TV family in Little Rock, Arkansas since 2007. He turned up as a stray, coming to visit another cat at the television station’s outdoor weather garden. His current petmom, THV Director of Media & Community Relations, Theba Lolley, fed him, took him to the vet, and ended up adopting him. Joey is a natural on TV, appearing frequently, and has lent his name to some pet related segments in the newscasts. Joey is a bona fide local celebrity, and was featured in a 2011 episode of Must Love Cats.
All of the Little Rock viewing area, and fans of Joey’s Facebook page, have recently been following the story of Joey medical concerns. A tumor in his leg was initially thought to be benign, but was then diagnosed as osteosarcoma, bone cancer. Joey’s vet, Dr. Bob Hale of Briarwood Animal Hospital in Little Rock has been working with Dr. Terry Dew of Azzore Veterinary Specialists in Russellville to come up with a plan for Joey. Rather than amputation, Joey will have a targeted surgery to remove the affected area and replace the bone with pins.
Dr. Dew discusses the surgery in the video below. Below that is an excerpt from Joey’s profile on Must Love Cats.
