Lost 22 Year Old Cat Reunited With Family

Sooty’s family feared for the worst when their 22 year old epileptic cat was missing for 3 weeks without his meds. Good Samaritans and concerned shelter staff helped to get him back home.

A 22 year old cat who was believed to be dead has been reunited with his owners thanks to the Scottish SPCA.

The McQuade family adopted Sooty from one of the Scottish SPCA rehoming centres in 2000. He recently returned to the SPCA when he arrived in the care of the Aberdeenshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre on February 10 after concerned members of the public reported the sick feline wandering around the Rosemount area of Aberdeen.

After being treated for an infection, Sooty’s microchip was checked but his details had not been updated. Not to be deterred,  dedicated shelter staff managed to track down his worried owners by contacting the vet he had previously been registered to.

Sonia McQuade and daughter Hilary, aged 11, were delighted to hear that Sooty, who suffers from epilepsy, was alive and well after going missing on 21 January. Centre Assistant Manager Debbie Innes said, “We are so glad we were able to reunite Sooty with his owners and it’s a particularly great story as Sonia actually rehomed him from our Lanarkshire Centre when he was ten years old. It’s always lovely when we have a happy ending and hopefully this will highlight to pet owners the importance of keeping microchip details up to date.”

Owner Sonia is overjoyed that Sooty managed to survive despite being without his epilepsy medication for three weeks. She said, “We are just so grateful to the Scottish SPCA for finding and caring for our little Sooty. “Hilary and I still can’t believe he is alive. He really is a miracle cat who must have 90 lives rather than nine!”
